In California, a school board of trustees is a group of elected or appointed community members responsible for governing public school districts. Their primary purpose is to ensure districts reflect community values and prioritize student achievement through policy-making and oversight. Key responsibilities include:

• Setting the district’s vision and goals
• Approving budgets and ensuring fiscal responsibility
• Hiring and evaluating the superintendent
• Adopting policies for district operations
• Advocating for students and communicating with the community

These duties are carried out collectively, with authority vested in the board as a whole, not individual members.
